As informs Nature, James Lovelock and Chris Rapley from the London Science Museum proposed the method of struggle against global warming.
In the article published in the magazine” Nature”, they have suggested to mix ocean by the support of vertical pipes. By scientists’ opinion, it should lift organic substances on a surface and cause strong multiplication of algae. Algae during the process of photosynthesis will consume carbon dioxide and include it in organic substances, and after the extinction of algae this fixed carbon will descend on the bottom and that will deduce it from circulation in the atmosphere.
It is known that the algae in the standard achieve a similar process, but as authors of a hypothesis approve, their method will help to double an amount of carbon, precipitated on the bottom of oceans.
The majority of scientists have skeptically disturbed to the new propose, having noted, that similar actions can have various unpredictable ecological consequences. Besides water itself contains more carbon dioxide on depth, than on a surface; therefore during the mixing its surplus will be isolated in the atmosphere and that will bring to nothing prospective effect from the multiplication of algae.
The editors of the magazine “Nature” emphasize that this article is published as “interesting proposal”, it has not passed usual reviewing by experts and does not contain the solidly valid scientific results. It is emphasized that although the hypothesis is interesting, it is one of the numerous proposals on the struggle against the global warming. As another example the editors of scientific journal bring proposal to install mirrors on the Earth’s orbit to reflect a part of sunlight and as a consequence to cool the Earth’s surface.
Nevertheless, the company Atmocean has become interested by the offer and going to lead the experiment. It is intended to omit in ocean of a pipe with a length of 300 meters and diameter of 3 meters, and by their help to mix layers of water, to measure amount of the multiplied algae and to calculate the correlation between the raised from the depth and which were descended on the bottom as a result of this process.
