this suggests to me electrons are waves, standing waves.
We need to know how much of this image is influenced by the picture-taking process, b/c the notion that an electron is really a standing wave would affect a lot of science.

the orbitals are the energy levels. Specifically called "principle quantum number." There are 4 sublevels for each energy level, s p d f. Each sublevel holds certain amount of electrons

orbitals go completely around the atom, correct? and i understand that there still is a point to energy levels even if they don't travel on them... but then what is the point of the sublevels? are orbitals solely within the sublevels, or around the entire atom?

It is a wave that is confined. That is what an electron is. Looks like I pictured it.

No, at different levels they have different paths. At some energy levels they almost go through nucleus. Believe or not!
mercedesclass (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
thats an atom. The electrons travel around the atom in a circular path in discrete "rings" or orbitals that surround the nucleus of the atom.

nice, but i dont understand what i'm looking at, it looks like ripples on a pond to me? any insights?
