You need TWICE AS MUCH ENERGY in electricity in order to produce hydrogen. Hence using your car generator you are loosing more energy than you are creating. All energy conversions radiate energy through heat.
Remember, according to the laws of physics, YOU CAN NOT PRODUCE ENERGY. YOU CAN ONLY CONVERT FROM ONE ENERGY CARRIER TO ANOTHER.
The only exception is nuclear power, where you harness the energy stored in the core of elementary particles from Big Bang.

The only way to make a Hydrogen economy is through new more efficient nuclear power and maybe even FUSION power plants.
