Whether men soar to outer space or dive to the bottom of the deepest ocean they will find themselves as they are, unchanged, because they will not have forgotten themselves nor remembered to exercise the charity of forgiveness. Meher Baba

The label usually owns the copyrights don't they? If a band switches labels, the records they made under the old label still get reproduced by the original label? The artist just gets a check by contract but they only own the lyrics or riffs (writing credits) or something?

"been brought and sold" People seem to be generally having issues with the word.

You get paid royalties for your copyright being used. You have two choices of contract with the music company, either agree to a salary for a promise of a certain number of albums or agree to a contract by numbers of sales. If your good, and the label knows it, theyll offer you the prior, but if the sales dont back up with the album sales then they reserve the right to terminate the contract, thus REALLY screwing over the artist and possibly down to over filesharing.

isn't that what big name artists do? 90% of the profit comes from performance, they only get a royalty check from distribution

If you would like to make your living out of it I can understand why you don't want to give it away. But then still: Radiohead had an action in which you could decide how much you would pay for it. And they still made quite some money, although you could get it free legally. The point is: once your famous enough people will be willing to pay ;). Wow... I totally lost what I was trying to say to you but well...

Very different medium, im not talking about a social scene. I produce music also and do give away my music, the only way i make money is through live performance and odd jobs. I would like to one day be able to produce music for a living, which is near impossible if you have to give it all away for free. Im not denying any good music would be made but people need to make a living, not just make music in spare time to impress the peers. Just giving my counter "opinion" btw.
